John McLean in Dunedin, New Zealand

Confusion is 'out there' with a few John McLeans living in Dunedin in the early 20th century....

and the offspring, as Mary also features as the wife multiple times.

John McLean, baker of Green Island, came to Dunedin in 1863.

He married Mary Jane Bust in Dunedin.

They had 12 children, more on  them below.

Born in 1838, in Rosemarkie, Scotland,  John died in 1912 and is buried in Green Island cemetery, Dunedin.

Buried in the Northern Cemetery, Dunedin, is a John McLean who died in 1904. He is buried with his wife Elizabeth Ann, Nee Ellison, d 1922. Although born in 1838 as well, he was born in Scotland and married his wife Elizabeth in Lancashire England. They had children in England, before coming to New Zealand. His son John Ellison McLean was born in England, 1873 and is buried in the Northern Cemetery plot too. As is John Ellison's wife Helena Sophia.

Also at Green Island, a suburb of Dunedin, was the family of John and Mary McLean, nee Cameron. This John and Mary were married in New Zealand in 1879, then (as far as I can make out) had a family of at least 5. This included Donald Cameron McLean born in 1883, as indexed in NZ bdm, under John and Mary (not Mary Jane). Tracking Donald Cameron Mclean through the Electoral Roll, WWI service, and electoral rolls after the war, we see he died in 1964. His will leaves anything to his sister Mary Cameron McLean and brother James Lindsay McLean. And all three of the siblings are buried at the Green Island cemetery, as per the Cemeteries search on the council website, and the record on Ancestry.

John and Mary Jane Mclean of Green Island did have a son John, who worked in the bakery. He was born 1873  and died 1941, and while also buried at Green Island, can not be confused with John Ellison Mclean, who is listed as a Tailor. They did not have a son called Donald, as evidence by indexes at NZ bdm. Eleven of their children are indexed under John and Mary Jane, their son Robert Bust McLean is indexed under Mary Ann and John.

The John Francis Mclean born 1898 looks to be a son of a different Mary Jane, he died in Australia, in 1991. His birthplace on Find a Grave is stated at Lawrence, Otago, New Zealand. (NB his war record may be available on Ancestry from Australia.)  Mary Jane (nee Bust) Mclean of Green Island, would have been about 55 years old by then.

So I feel I have the families sorted out, but will get to those cemeteries to see what I can see.
